Adding a Defense

Follow these steps to add a new defense. Only editors with rights to submit defenses can do this.

From the Dashboard

  1. Select "Defenses" in the left navigation.

  2. In the "Listing Dissertation Defenses" window, in the right navigation, click on "New Defense" in the "Create New Defense".

  3. In the "New Defense" window, from the dropdown menu "Program", select the degree program.

  4. Add the student's First Name and Last name exactly as it will appear in the announcement and on the Convocation and Commencement program. If there is a middle name or initial, include it with the first name (e.g. Meredith M.)

  5. Add a Title for the dissertation. Use sentence capitalization. Do not use all caps. Do not put punctuation at the end.

  6. Add the abstract to the "Abstract" field.

    • Use "Paste as Plain Text" if pasting text from another source.

    • If abstract is long, it should be broken into paragraphs. Send back to student for re-editing, if necessary.

    • Review the text for typos and errors before submitting the defense.

  7. Select a director by typing in the first part of the person's email. If the email does not appear, check with your site's web contact to see if the person is in CHSSWeb.

  8. Enter names of the committee members in the "Committee members" field.

    • Do not use titles or letters before or after the name.

    • Do not use "and" between names.

    • Do not add the major professor to the list of committee members.

    • Do not add affiliations of any of the committee members.

  9. Add a defense start day time, end time, location. For Room use "#" plus number.

  10. Review information and hit "Submit" under "Publishing Controls".
