How to Use Your Promotional Marquee

The eye-catching, promotional marquee is an optional feature, as are most things on your homepage, but if used correctly it can be powerful. We hope you will use it to give visitors to your site a quick but deep impression of who you are.

We recommend that you use the promotional marquee the way you would use a printed brochure. Identify three to five key aspects of your department or program and create one promotional marquee entry for each of those aspects. Combined with the main text area, this becomes an at-a-glance description of who you are, what you offer, what makes you special. There are many ways this approach could play out.

We hope these examples will help you as you develop your own promotional approach. If you would like help planning your approach or working out the technical details, we are available.

Examples

For instance, History and Art History might use the promotional marquee to highlight their disciplines and their prominent center:

  • History
  • Art History
  • Center for History and New Media

or they might focus on the regional breakdown:

  • American History
  • European History
  • Comparative World Regional History
  • Art History

or they might focus on key aspects of the department:

  • Scholarship
  • Teaching

Psychology might focus on their mission:

  • Enhancing Human Potential
  • Through Research-Based Practice
  • Through Practice-Informed Research

 or on their graduate programs:

  • Clinical Psychology
  • School Psychology
  • Human Factors and Applied Cognition
  • Industrial/Organizational Psychology
  • Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience
  • Applied Developmental Psychology

English might choose to highlight the unit's many disciplines. However, they have seven associated disciplines, which would make for a very long, busy marquee. They could instead break it down by aspects of their mission, highlighting graduate programs, undergraduate programs, and research. Or they may wish to do what they currently do on their About page and highlight Scholarship, Teaching and Service/Community.

Both PIA and CLS could highlight the practical advantages brought by proximity to the nation's capital.

This is not a comprehensive list. There are many approaches you can take.

To What Should the Promotional Items Link?

The promotional marquee should not just be eye candy. It should serve a function. Each marquee entry should link to something. If you are highlighting specific programs, the easiest approach would be to link to the individual program brochures within the site.

Another approach would be to create a page for each marquee entry. Use each page to describe yourself and your offerings with regard to a specific aspect of your unit.

For instance, Economics might focus on the schools of thought within Economics and populate their marquee with these promotional marquee entries:

  • Austrian Economics
  • Public Choice
  • Experimental

The editors of the Economics site would need a compelling and appropriate image for each entry. They could choose to have each entry link to a page that describes the department and the related centers from the perspective of that school, with links to relevant degree programs, courses, key faculty members, information for current students, etc. They could take it further and view each promotional marquee item as the gateway to a multi-page brochure describing that aspect of the department in detail.

The end product would be a virtual brochure and gateway to the department's offerings.
